Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2021
In one way, 2020 was a year like any other: Celebrity couples uncoupled. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to our modern world, Hollywood remained a tough place to form lasting relationships. Here’s a look at all the celebrity couples that have called it quits in 2021. Read it and literally weep.
Katie Holmes and Emilio Vitolo Jr
ET confirmed in May that the actress and the chef had called it quits after first being romantically linked in September 2020.
"Their relationship was existing in a bubble," a source told ET of the reason behind the breakup. "Because of the pandemic, she wasn't jet setting around the country for jobs and he wasn't tied up every night working at his family's restaurant [Emilio's Ballato in NYC]. His usually very busy social life was non-existent, and so they had all the time in the world for each other."
Once life started to get back to normal as quarantine regulations began to lift, Holmes and Vitolo realized they "aren't as compatible anymore."
Connor Trott and Mackenzie Dipman
This roller coaster romance has run its course. Love Island stars Conner Trott and Mackenzie Dipman -- who sparked a romance after they'd both been kicked out of the villa in season 2 -- announced that they decided to call it quits on March 6. The pair released a joint statement to their respective Instagram stories to share the news with fans. "We are both young and in the early stages of careers, and sadly those careers are keeping us in two different places. One of us is in Pittsburgh and the other is in Tucson, and neither of us will be able to move anytime in the near future," the statement shared. "So over the last couple of weeks we have started having some difficult conversations about our future."
The couple said they ultimately "realized that our lives are moving in different directions" and that they "have both made commitments to cities that are over 2,000 miles apart."
"We both have so much love for each other and had hopes that we could make this work, but relationships are about timing, and this is just not our time," the statement continued. ""We are unsure of what the future holds for us, but one thing is for certain, we will always have each other. And we will forever be grateful that Love Island brought us together."
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Following a difficult 2020, Kim officially filed for divorce from Kanye on Feb. 19, after nearly seven years of marriage and almost a decade together.
"Kim filing for divorce from Kanye is just a formal part of the process. The couple has been done for a while and have been amicable for a while," a source told ET at the time. "At the end of the day Kanye and Kim love each other immensely but knew it was time to call it quits. Their children are their number one priority and no matter what will maintain a positive relationship for them."
G-Eazy and Ashley Benson
G-Eazy and Ashley Benson called it quits after less than a year of dating, a source told ET on Feb. 8. Romance rumors between the "No Limit" rapper and the former Pretty Little Liars star were first sparked in May, after they were photographed showing PDA in Los Angeles. "G-Eazy really enjoys being in relationships and likes the idea of having a girlfriend, but his relationship with Ashley was becoming a bit too domestic for his liking and that was one of the reasons they broke up," the source said. "Now that their relationship is over, he’s looking forward to being single."
Rebel Wilson and Jacob Busch
Rebel Wilson revealed that she and boyfriend Jacob Busch had called it quits in an Instagram post she shared on Feb. 2. In the pic, Wilson -- wearing a denim dress, yellow cardigan and heels -- stands on the steps of a trailer, which appears to be on the set of her latest project. "Lots on my mind...aghhhhhh… #single-girl-heading-to-Super-Bowl!" she captioned the shot. Wilson and Busch made their red carpet debut in September 2020.
Simon Baker and Rebecca Rigg
Simon Baker and his wife of 29 years, Rebecca Rigg, announced that they had called it quits in a joint statement released on Jan. 29. "The longtime couple quietly split last April and have jointly stated, 'We remain close friends and our three children will always be the most important focus of our lives,'" the statement explained. Baker, 51, and Rigg, 53, met in the '90s and co-starred on the Australian soap opera E Street. They share three children together; daughter Stella, 27 and sons Claude, 22, and Harry, 19.
Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas
After a whirlwind pandemic romance, Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas called it quits after a year of dating, ET confirmed on Jan. 18. A source told ET, "Ben and Ana have split up and Ben is single. They had little arguments and bickered like any couple but ultimately the relationship just wasn’t working in the way they both wanted it to anymore. This was a mutual decision. They both have a lot of love and respect for each other, but it was time for them to move on. At the end of the day he chose to be the dad he continues to want to be. Unfortunately they are in different places in their lives." In March 2020, a source told ET that Affleck and de Armas had an "instant connection" after meeting on the set of their upcoming psychological thriller, Deep Water, in the fall of 2019. After vacationing together, they were frequently spotted in public in the following months, going on coffee runs, walking their dogs and attending protests.
